The Events to Travel For This November

Whether you’re a winter glow-getter, devout art hound or jazz cat, November’s global line up of events won’t fail to tickle your fancy. From music festivals in Berlin and Hong Kong to Design Week in Dubai and the world’s biggest marathon in New York, here are the events worth getting on a plane for this November.

Berlin

Hop along to the be-bop-de-doo-wop at JazzFest Berlin (31 Oct–3 Nov), held in the striking Haus der Berliner Festspiele and smaller venues across the city. Anthony Braxton opens the festival with his third global performance of Sonic Genome; the lineup includes a further 28 global acts. Don’t miss the new after-hours performances; Late Night Labs 1 & Late Night Labs 2 starring the likes of Anja Lauvdal, Petter Eldh and Lukas König.

Dubai

As temperatures begin to dip after the scorchio summer, so Dubai’s creative scene heats up. Befitting such a futuristic city, Dubai Design Week (11-16 Nov) held in hip D3 district is the largest creative gathering in the Middle East, bringing together architects and talents working in product, furniture, interior and graphic design. For six days, the city is overtaken by exhibits, workshops and talks about form and function.

Hong Kong

Never a city to let a crisis keep it down, Hong Kong is abuzz with events this November. The Hong Kong Literary Festival (1-10 Nov) attracts a diverse mix of upcoming, award-winning and newsworthy scribes from Asia and beyond; this year’s headliners include global nomad Pico Iyer and Marcus Zusak, author of the international bestseller The Book Thief.

West Kowloon’s Freespace Jazz Fest (9-10 Nov) hosts free and ticketed weekend performances by local and regional jazz acts. Always a highlight Clockenflap (22-24 Nov) lands at Central Harbourfront for a weekend of beats, booze and art; Halsey, Mumford and Sons, Honne and The Kooks are among this year’s lineup.

New York

Not just a one-day occasion, the five-borough straddling New York City Marathon (3 Nov) welcomes thousands of runners to a week-long program of pre n’ post-race events, including charity warm-up runs, talks, a fundraiser (1 Nov) and mega carb-loading dinner (2 Nov). Feeling clam lazy but want to soak up the atmos? Join spectators gathering in Central Park to cheer on racers as they cross the finish line. On your marks, set…

Legs fully stretched, the world’s finest dealers descend on the Big Apple for The Salon Art + Design (14-18 Nov) a four-day showcase of heritage and contemporary furniture, design and art. Espy everything from Art Deco to Mid-Century Modern pieces, hailing from France, Italy, Scandinavia and America.

Paris

Over in La Ville Lumière, shutterbugs convene at Grand Palais’ for Paris Photo (7-10 Nov),  the largest international exhibition of photography, from C.19th to the modern day. Support act ‘In Paris During Paris Photo’, sees partner galleries across the city open up their own archival troves.

Shanghai

The annual Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair (7-10 Nov) returns to the Shanghai Exhibition Centre for its sixth edition and showcases a top-notch edit of modern works by some of the world’s leading galleries. A program of educational talks and projects accompany the show.  

Held simultaneously, West Bund Art & Design Fair (7-10 Nov) welcomes more than 100 international and local galleries incl. White Cube, ShanghART and Silverlens, plus a slew of events and popups taking place around the city.
