White gold

Zip out of Milan and in about two hours (probably sooner if you’re in a Maserati), you’ll be swapping couture perfumes for the heady scent of white truffles in Alba, the birthplace of the coveted ‘shrooms, especially with the Fiera del Tartufo Bianco d’Alba (White Truffle Festival) starting this weekend. We can smell them already. Mmm…

Thanks to the Venice Biennale, from now until November, La Serenissima is crammed with even more crowds, as cool creative types jostle with the usual coachload legions. It seems everyone, from the beautiful to the less so, are scrambling for a taste of Mara’s seafood at 1-Michelin-starred Da Fiore, and the VVIPs can’t get enough of the special white-gloved service they receive at Harry’s Bar, while you get ignored. It doesn’t have to be that way however, as those in-the-know slip away by boat to nearby foodie getaways like Venissa and Locanda Cipriani, for sumptuous meals, wine and idyllic lagoon living.

Dear hearts, what is that sound? The tinkle of ice? The thrum and thrall of expectation? Yes, oh yes, and thrice yes. When the Violet Hour comes, and come it always does – as the end of day approaches but night has not quite arrived, now is the time for The Beautiful Drink. Foolish is the creature who partakes at lunchtime, that way madness lies, and probably insider dealing or infidelity, or both. But at six o’clock, or seven if you must, is there a greater joy? For those who don’t drink martinis, it must seem like a ridiculous world – what’s so special about cold gin in a glass, right?
