Sustainability, without forgoing luxury
No, you silly sausage, LUXE isn’t sending you off to a nudist camp. Naked Stables is a new luxury eco-resort and equestrian reserve, and sister to the more rustic Naked Home Village, both of which are set in the hills of Moganshan, two and a half hours drive from Shanghai. It’s your ticket to a weekend getaway from the city excess.
Power to the people
“Great service, great value, great style for everyone” is the mantra of Public Chicago, the first in a new generation of über-hotelier Ian Schrager’s latest venture. The king of boutique hotel elitism, whether at The Royalton, The Mondrian, The Delano or other bastions of hip, has declared that it’s time to give people what they really want (see mantra), and nothing that they don’t. Of course, rather than being a groundbreaking idea, we think service, value and style for all should be seen as fundamentals of hospitality, but who are we to quibble when Public looks this good and seems to be holding up its pledge.
Buongiorno, Milano
Some cities are so much nicer in cool weather, and Milan is one such destination. Stores are immaculately laid out with the chicest autumn/winter collections, while furs, pooches, prima donnas and nipped and tucked faces are out on parade. And in a city not known for its beautiful architecture, Milan’s cathedral, Il Duomo di Milano, looks even more stunning, especially with such a magnificent blue sky as backdrop.

The hills are alive...
We love nipping over to Taipei to gorge on dumplings and beef noodles, but while the capital might tempt our taste buds, it’s always nice to get out of the city. Not far from the Western plains are a host of options that will delight the outdoorsy as Taipei does the foodie, including one of our faves, Taroko Gorge. Burn off the city excess on the plentiful hiking trails, or go river tracing with aboriginal guides, but if that just ain’t your style, you could always lounge by the pool or retreat into the spa at Silks Place hotel, where we snapped this photo from. It’s not for nothing that Taiwan was called Ilha Formosa, the Beautiful Island…

Monsieur Lamarre, The Cirque Man
Running away to join the circus is only a childhood fancy, right? Not if you’re Daniel Lamarre, former journalist, PR whiz, media mogul and now CEO and President of Cirque du Soleil, and what a circus it is. Since its inception in 1984, more than 100 million people have seen one of the resident or touring Cirque du Soleil shows, and the multiple shows in Las Vegas alone play to 9,000 spectators per night. Since former street artist Guy Laliberté founded the company, it has grown by leaps and bounds to employ 5,000 worldwide, including more than 1,300 artists, from Canada to China. While Mr. Lamarre was in Macau to relaunch the resident show ZAIA, he snuck in some time to do a Q&A, and tells us about travel, business and his plans for growth in China and Asia Pacific.
White gold
Zip out of Milan and in about two hours (probably sooner if you’re in a Maserati), you’ll be swapping couture perfumes for the heady scent of white truffles in Alba, the birthplace of the coveted ‘shrooms, especially with the Fiera del Tartufo Bianco d’Alba (White Truffle Festival) starting this weekend. We can smell them already. Mmm…
